AsPAC Competition 2018

The Asia Student Package Design Competition (ASPaC) is an international cultural exchange project aimed at grooming talented young designers of Asia so as to create a common future driven by “Asia”, “Students” and “Design”.

This project is organized and promoted by Japan Foundation, ASPaC Association and Japan Package Design Association (JPDA), with the support of public institutions, design associations, corporate companies and academic institutions of the participating countries and regions. ASPaC’s visions are to enhance international cultural exchange between Japan and Asia, as well as to foster the ability to create our own future and soar to greater heights.

As this project submission is part of University submission, a brief was created to shape our design thinking process. We were given opportunities to choose a range of themes provided by our lecturer and create a documentation research based on the chosen theme. I have chosen to design a baby food packaging based on personal experiences.

During the ideation process, I thought about how this packaging can be innovative, previously, I came up with the stacking process of combining three meal cans into one packaging but it was only that, there was nothing interesting about a tube like packaging design. I thought a lot of the word innovative and how a tube can be innovative other than just packaging three meal cans.

Since the packaging is for kids, it will make sense that if I can turn the packaging into a toy. Initially, I wanted to do a doll house that opens up to reveal the baby food in it. I also wanted to integrate the tube part into the toy and thus, making the tube into the body of the truck instead.

StackIt is a baby food packaging that packs three different flavours within one packaging. The age group for this toddler food packaging is from 2 years old and above. There are a lot of baby/toddler food packagings in supermarts that are sold individually, StackIt makes it easy for caretakers to grab three food cans that are packed together. When one food can is used, there are still 2 other food cans more that are left in the truck, allowing the child to play with the truck while the packaging is still useable to store the other two food cans, it saves space for the caretakers to store food and interactive at the same time for the child to play with it. Even if all the food cans are used up, the packaging can still be kept and used as a normal truck toy.

This packaging design uses a stacking method, innovative in saving more space and doubles up as a truck that is can be re-used while and after using the packaging itself. Even though the packaging does not state anything that it is a baby food packaging, one can know from the look of the truck toy and the theme is reflected from the colours used. The fact that it is a toy truck and flavours stated on the packaging helps to show that it is a baby food packaging. The fun cartoon-like visuals also helps to convey that it is for kids.

How to use it:

1) Open the lid of the truck toy

2) Use one food can at a time for each meal time

3) Fasten the truck toy lid

4) Let the child interact with the truck toy
